Got a chance to meet Si Cranstoun yesterday. I’ve been enjoying his videos online on youtube and was really looking forward to coming out and checking out his performance at Viva this year, but it was so great to run into him yesterday, to meet him and to find out he’s equality as geeky as us about video shooting. That was the best. I was pretty burned out yesterday while walking around and we connect towards the end of the night and all of a sudden I had gain new energy and was excited again about shooting. Can’t for tonight.

We’re bringing the whole Pinup Girl Clothing gang along to join in the fun, so if you’re around Viva Las Vegas today, make sure you stop by the Main Ballroom at midnight tonight. See you there.

Amazing video piece on looking back at ourselves while headed to the moon.

From the Vimeo Post:

On the 40th anniversary of the famous ‘Blue Marble’ photograph taken of Earth from space, Planetary Collective presents a short film documenting astronauts’ life-changing stories of seeing the Earth from the outside – a perspective-altering experience often described as the Overview Effect.
The Overview Effect, first described by author Frank White in 1987, is an experience that transforms astronauts’ perspective of the planet and mankind’s place upon it. Common features of the experience are a feeling of awe for the planet, a profound understanding of the interconnection of all life, and a renewed sense of responsibility for taking care of the environment.
‘Overview’ is a short film that explores this phenomenon through interviews with five astronauts who have experienced the Overview Effect. The film also features insights from commentators and thinkers on the wider implications and importance of this understanding for society, and our relationship to the environment.

The Company

I’m currently starting a new project and I’m finally getting excited about it. The project is basically to produce content for a company that sells vintage inspired reproduction clothing. Our project is called PinupTV and the company is called PinupGirlClothing.com. The company has been around for about 14 years or so, and they’ve been growing fast in the last couple of years.

The Community

One of the interesting things about this company is how big of a community they’ve created. The company’s CEO Laura Byrnes or “Supreme Overlord” the term she prefers to use when describing herself, is quite an interesting character. She’s very vocal about her views on personal acceptance and will not stand for anyone bullying others for no reason over the web or otherwise. She has definitely created quite a loyal fan-base of girls who are not only inspired by Laura but support her views. Her community on facebook has grown to over half a million, and she has started her own facebook style social networking website titled Pinup Girl Style which consists of about 10k members and is fast growing.

The Project

So our job is to produce some video web content for Pinup Girl Clothing, and we’ve decided to do this in the form of a video web series which would introduce Laura and various characters involved in running the Pinup Girl Clothing empire. The Pinup Girl team is also growing fast so there’s a vast amount of interesting characters with various degrees of comfort in front of the camera which will make this for a very challenging project.

The Logos

Creating graphics is the one of the very first things I wanted to attack, even though we’ve already had a couple of shoots and have begin putting together some edits. The graphics plays a big role in choosing the look of the series and marketing material we’ll wanna use to promote the content once we upload it.

The Pinup Girl Clothing logo has gone thru a few different iterations thru-out the years. Here are some examples of some of the more current ones.

I’m not exact on details, I remember hearing something about Pinup Girl Clothing constantly having problems with people copying their designs and style, they had to come up with ways to stop this from happening, so they went as far as to create their own font in order to create a unique looking logo. Then of course, after they created their own font, people still found a way to copy the font. I don’t know what it is about it, but I guess people see something become successful, they wanna copy it exactly as much as possible to see if they can recreate that success.

Here’s the current Pinup Girl Clothing Logo as it appears on the website. They are still using the same font and logo even though I’ve seen a couple of different companies copy the font pretty much exactly as this. I just don’t get that. I mean, I understand the feeling of wanting to copying things that inspire you, but that’s just it. If you see a logo or design that you like and it makes you wanna copy it, as a graphic designer I think you need to find a way to let the things you like inspire you instead of allowing yourself to just make a straight rip off.

Here’s another version of the logo which includes the full website address. It’s kind of a long website address, but it’s been around for so long that it just works. The community knows it, it’s been a top website in this industry for so many years now, that even though it break some of the basic rules of a good domain name, I guess it still works, and it works well.

This is a more current and modern Pinup Girl Clothing logo. I’m not quite sure about this, but it seems to me that this was created for the Boutique that was just recently opened in Burbank of Magnolia Blvd. I really like this version of the logo, except it kind a seems to me like it’s incomplete. They worked on the Pinup Girl words and it looks great with the fancy font and spacing, however, it seems like maybe because this was created with the Boutique words below it, they never meant for it to be used as a full Pinup Girl Clothing logo. Someone just added the Clothing words below, but spacing is off and letters don’t quite go with the rest of it.

A few years ago, while we were working together with Pinup Girl Clothing to produce Vintage Rock ‘n Roll Style events in the Downtown Los Angeles area, we crated this logo to be used on our flyers and graphics needed to promote the shows. We used it around a lot in all the shows that involved Pinup Girl Clothing, but I’m guessing Laura or the company wasn’t really too fond of it and they never used it on anything official. We’ve used it on a couple of other video projects produced for Pinup Girl Clothing thru-out.

During the spring of 2011 while Pinup Girl Clothing attended Viva Las Vegas, we had the chance to produce a bunch of content direct from the festival. It was actually the first time we produced videos directly under the name PinupTV. You can see some of the content from that year on this page. We created a special logo to use for that project.

We’re now starting a new project with PinupTV and for this we felt like we needed to revamp the look of the PinupTV Logo, so this is what we’ve come up with so far. This is what we’re starting with, and now it’s time to take animate the logo. The next step will be to separate these elements and start working on some motion graphics to create our intros and bumpers.

What do you guys think? I’m afraid I’ve been looking at these for too long and now I’m looking at them with a warped vision. It’s like when you say a word over and over again ’till it start sounding really weird to you. Kind of like that.

NYC Dark from Already Alive on Vimeo.

I don’t know about you, but I’ve always found New York City fascinating. Ever since the very first time I visited I just fell in love with it and always want to see more and more of it. I wish I had a reason to go back and spend some time there again. I saw this video today and thought it was so great. The lights went out last week in Manhattan, and this guy, instead of sitting in the dark in his apartment, he decided to go out side and see the city with different eyes. It must have a pretty incredible experience to walk around the dark city, all the lights off, but still so much life and energy, just in the dark. Must have been amazing.

Here’s what he had to say:

Seeing lower Manhattan without power was a surreal experience. This is traditionally a city that never sleeps. One in which the lights are always on. One that is always bustling with people. When the lights went out it was wholly different. This piece is meant to capture and relay the feeling of what it was like to walk around the darkened streets of lower Manhattan.

I’m currently on the set of a new web show called Chug, Plug & Review by Blip.TV. We shot a few episodes a few weeks ago and they liked them so much, that they ordered a whole season worth of it. It was actually a lot of fun to shoot and we’re back to shoot a lot more episodes now. Really looking forward to today. We just finished our setup and now we’re just waiting for the talent.

Wait wait wait, it’s all a part of production.

We’re shooting with two cameras, and there’s two segments to shoot, the interview part is shot with the A Cam on a Tripod and the B Cam is on the new Jag35 Slider. See pic below.

It was actually kind a nice to shoot with a Canon Camcorder, we used the Canon XF105. It had been quite a while since I’ve played around at all with any video camcorder, but it was nice not to have to worry about recording time, plus we were able to hook up our audio directly to the on camera XLRs, instead of recording all our audio to an external source. This little camera was pretty great, I don’t have much time to get into more details, but here’s a full on review by Philip Bloom
