I’ve been on a journey lately, exploring the depths of humility. The experience is challenging and incredibly eye-opening. I’ve been diving into Chapter 10 of Andrew Murray’s “Humility,” and what I’m learning is transforming how I see my life and my relationship with God. The chapter talks about “death to self” which is off-putting. It’s really about discovering a more authentic and vibrant life. In this context, death, though typically seen as an end, acts as a gateway to something far greater.

The Path of Humility: Following Jesus

The chapter starts by showing us that humility is the path to dying to self. It’s not about diminishing my self-worth or undervaluing myself; rather, it’s about recognizing my total reliance on God. This process entails releasing my self-centeredness and fully surrendering to God. This idea really hit me. It’s in that place of surrender that I can truly receive what God has for me.

Jesus’s Example of Humility

To understand this, I look at Jesus. He is the ultimate example of humility. He became obedient to the point of death on the cross. It wasn’t just physical death; it was a death to His own will, a total surrender to God’s plan. He showed us the ultimate act of humility, proving his complete surrender. This wasn’t something He did lightly, He had to give up his own desires to follow God’s will. I am learning that this is the same path I am called to follow.

Death to Self: God’s Work, Our Choice

The chapter explains that this death to self isn’t something I can achieve on my own. It’s God’s work within me. He does this through my union with Christ’s death and resurrection. My part is to choose humility voluntarily. I have to recognize my helplessness and fully surrender to Him. That’s my one responsibility. I need to be willing to let go of my own desires and ambitions and trust that He will work in me.

My Journey with Humility

This is where it gets really personal. In my journal, I realized that this idea of “dying to self” can sometimes trigger a battle within me. I have to admit that this is a real struggle, but it’s also a sign of the Holy Spirit at work. The fact that I’m wrestling with it shows that God is making me aware and that I am sensitive to His voice. It’s a journey, not an event, where I progressively become more humble through the Spirit’s power. I am called to be an imitator of Christ, who was obedient all the way to the cross.

The Result of Humility: A Transformed Life

Humility isn’t the final goal, it’s the starting point. It’s the bud, and death to self is the fruit. Dying to selfish desires leads to true humility. It’s a transformation of character, resulting in a life of meekness, lowliness, and service to others. It’s about making space for the Spirit of Christ to fully work in me. I understand that through the process of surrender, my actions start to mirror the inner transformation, and this becomes visible to those around me.

Choosing Humility Daily

The chapter encourages me to embrace what humbles me and view my frustrations as learning opportunities. By choosing humility daily, I am making space for the Spirit of Christ to work within me, and this is the way to experience the power of His life. It’s about letting go of my will and embracing God’s will. Romans 6:3 reminds us, “When we became Christians and were baptized into union with Christ Jesus, we shared in His death…”
