Life as a Christian is an incredible journey, yet, it’s not without its battles. Spiritual Warfare is a concept that describes the very real fight between good and evil happening within each of us. It’s a concept that I’ve been wrestling with a lot lately, and this morning, on my walk, God gave me some fresh insights about how to find victory, even in the midst of the struggle.
Recognizing the Battlefield of Spiritual Warfare
I see this spiritual warfare in my own life, particularly in my relationship with my wife. It’s like we both have this internal argument raging inside us. Often, when we try to have a conversation, we’re already fighting a battle in our minds. We react to one another based on our internal struggles, rather than genuinely listening and understanding. It’s like the enemy has set up camp in our thoughts, whispering lies and stirring conflict.
Identifying the Enemy in Spiritual Warfare
The Bible clearly tells us that our enemy is Satan, and his goal is to steal, kill, and destroy our lives. [John 10:10] He wants to keep us trapped in a cycle of sin and defeat. He preys on our weaknesses and uses our own sinful nature against us. This “sinful nature” is our default setting – it’s what we naturally gravitate towards, and it takes a conscious effort to resist it.
Even when we intellectually know that God offers goodness, blessings, and a better way of life, we still struggle to align our actions with that knowledge. It’s because we have a lifetime of patterns and habits that keep us moving in the wrong direction. Breaking free from these patterns can feel impossible at times.
Overcoming the Enemy
Thankfully, we are not alone in this fight. God has given us everything we need to overcome the enemy and walk in victory. One of the most important weapons in our arsenal is the Word of God. Romans 12:2 tells us, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” We need to constantly be filling our minds with truth so that we can discern the lies of the enemy.
The things we consume—spiritually, mentally, emotionally, and even physically—shape who we become. If I fill my mind with negativity, I will produce negative thoughts and actions. However, when I concentrate on God’s Word and allow His truth to transform me, I will start to bear the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. [Galatians 5:22-23] It’s a daily choice to fight for the good, to choose God’s way over our own.
Finding Support in Spiritual Warfare
Another powerful tool is the support of other believers. We were not meant to fight this battle alone. The author of Hebrews encourages us to “consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.” [Hebrews 10:24-25]
Sometimes, in our eagerness to help others, we can actually hinder their growth. Instead of trying to fix their problems or offer unsolicited advice, we need to learn to truly listen. We must give people the space to process their own struggles and come to their own conclusions.
One of the most encouraging experiences I’ve had lately has been in a men’s group led by a man named Ruben. He creates an atmosphere of safety and vulnerability where everyone feels comfortable sharing their struggles. There’s no judgment, only support and encouragement. Being a part of this group has taught me so much about the power of community and the importance of walking alongside others in their spiritual warfare.
Winning the War Within
The battle of spiritual warfare is real, but the victory is already won. Jesus Christ defeated death and sin on the cross, and He offers us that same victory. When we surrender our lives to Him, we receive His power to overcome temptation and live a life that honors Him.
This doesn’t mean the battle will be easy, but it does mean we can face it with confidence, knowing that God is with us every step of the way. We can choose to walk in His strength and experience the peace that surpasses all understanding. [Philippians 4:7]
My prayer is that each of us would grow in our awareness of spiritual warfare and learn to fight effectively. May we all experience the joy of walking in victory and becoming more like Christ each day.
The journey of faith is full of challenges; however, it’s also incredibly rewarding. We don’t have to face these battles alone. God is with us, and He has given us everything we need to overcome.
